Obituary of Mary Lou Merrell

Mrs. Mary Lou Merrell, 89, of Greensboro, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2015, at her home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, February 25th, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home, with the Reverend Don Clement officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Mary Lou was born in Greensboro on June 22, 1925 to Oliver and Bertha Bovender. She was raised in Greensboro and attended Curry School and Curry High School, graduating in 1942. During the early years of WW II Mary Lou worked at the Carolina Theater and met her future husband, John F. (Buddy) Merrell II. The couple married at the Merrell family home on Rankin Street. Shortly afterward they moved to California where her husband was stationed in the US Navy and deployed to the South Pacific. After the war ended the couple lived in an apartment on Haight Street in San Francisco and moved back home to Greensboro in 1947. Mary Lou was employed in the mid 1960's as the secretary to the Chair of the English department at UNCG, A post she held until she retired in the early 1990's. She met and worked with many regionally and nationally famous literary figures. Mary Lou was a kind and gentle lady who was both generous and compassionate and at times a 'Steel Magnolia'. She enjoyed music, travel, flowers, entertaining, and cooking. She will be missed by many people throughout Greensboro and North Carolina. Marry Lou is survived by her sons, John F. Merrell III, of Columbus, KS and David A. Merrell (and fiancee' Mary Gierie) of New Bern, NC; grandsons, Johnathon 'Storm' Merrell and Hunter Merrell. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister, Modine Bovender. The family will received friends from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home.
